Today I'm going to take you back about 250 odd years.

I am sure that most of you would have heard of Ralph Waldo Emerson, even if you may not be familiar with his poetry (I put my hand up here), but I have read some of his quotes that I like. This is one of them:

"Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires...courage".

The key here team, is to not be a sheep. Don't follow the crowd. After all, where does the crowd lead you?

Normally to the wrong place.

If it was for following the crowd, I might have had a crisis after turning 30 rather than enjoying doing so...

I might have taken up smoking during the teenage years when the other blokes were having a puff while enjoying a few cans...

You may not have ended up taking the career path that you decided to pursue. Chances are if you are reading this you are pursuing it successfully.

Don't listen to the knockers.

Too many people want to bring you down to their miserable level.

Let them stay there.

I enjoy passing them on the stairs of life.

MY 2 CENTS WORTH

This is an article I wrote last week after witnessing some interesting scenes at a gym I train clients at.

FAT LOSS? FAT CHANCE!

While in the gym recently, I saw two fatal mistakes, within five minutes, which will definitely slow your quest for fat loss.

Mistake # 1: Lifting small weights.
The only excuse you have to lift small is if you are rehabbing an injury. Too many times I see people, sorry ladies but you’re the main offenders, lifting a weight that will barely raise a sweat and doing endless repetitions because they don’t want to ‘bulk up’.

This is going to have ZERO fat loss benefits.

You want optimum fat loss results? Lift heavy. Pick a challenging weight for you and do only 8-10 repetitions. You too ladies. No, you won’t get big muscles from this. Your body does not produce enough testosterone for this to happen.

Mistake # 2: Sitting on an exercise bike reading a book (or any machine for that matter).
To top things off, this person was barely turning their legs over. You may get some stress relief from being out of the office but that’s about all. Sorry to burst your bubble.

You want optimum fat loss results? Aerobic training is dead. Read it again if you must. Put the blowtorch on your metabolism and do some interval training. Try high intensity intervals for 10-60 seconds then back off and go easy for a longer period of time.

The end result is maximum fat loss and the body you want and deserve!

Dare to be different.

Get out and make it a great week!

If you haven't checked back here since last monday, there is a video that I want you to watch. It takes just under 10 mins but that is 10 minutes that you definately WON'T waste today.

I was reading something during the week and I came across this very powerful statement. It is from Sales Trainer John Hammond:

"The elevator to the top is out of order - you will have to take the stairs and you will have to take them one at a time."

What do you think?

I like it. No short cuts to success is what it all comes down to.

How many times have you heard about the so called 'hard luck' stories of the people who win lotto and lose it all in a couple of years because they are the schmuck who listens to someone who is out to take advantage of them.

Do you think they would've been in the same place if they had've earnt their money through years of working smart? Of course not.

Sure sometimes business people fall on hard times and have to rebuild but the difference is they almost always get back on top.

Think Donald Trump. You don't get much bigger than that. Think John Symonds of Aussie Home Loans. Ditto.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Long time readers will know that I love to throw in a good article or 3 about flax seeds every now and then. Now here's another benefit.

A Cancer Inhibitor With a Little Crunch
By Ray Sahelian, M.D.

I am a big fan of flaxseeds. I really enjoy the crunchy taste. Flaxseeds - which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans (a fiber found in the seed coat) - are helpful for colon health, similar in some ways to psyllium. And new research indicates that they can prevent the spread of some types of cancer.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina took a look at the seed's role as a food supplement in 161 men who were scheduled to undergo surgery for prostate cancer. Half of the men added 30 grams of flaxseed (about one ounce) to their diets for about 30 days.

After the surgery, the researchers looked at the men's tumor cells to see how quickly the cancer had multiplied. The cancer cells in the flaxseed group were growing about 30 to 40 percent slower than in the control group.

If you want to get the health benefits of flaxseeds, you can add half a teaspoon or a teaspoon of raw flaxseeds to soups and salads. Or you can take a flaxseed oil supplement in the form of one or two softgels a day. You can find flaxseeds and flaxseed oil in health food stores or online.

As a sidenote - I like my flax seed oil but make sure that you keep it in the fridge and away from direct light. It has a short shelf life (around 30 days or so from memory) so make sure if you buy a big one that it gets used otherwise it can become rancid.

You will find this in the fridge of your local chemist or health supplement store. I know what I'll be adding to my nice little stir fry tonight!

IT COULD BE WORSE...

You now officially have no more excuses.

Thanks to Ryan Lee for passing this awesome footage on.

Last night I was doing a bit of channel surfing during ad breaks on the cricket and noticed a bit of the new So You Think You Can Dance Australia. I must confess I did get into it a bit and left the cricket for a while.

While, I'm not normally a fan of the dance - although my mates would say I used to do a pretty good VB shuffle back in the day - it caught my eye that the top 100 was really seperated into 2 distinct groups.

The interesting thing is it resembles the normal situations we come across in everyday life. There are always 2 sets of people.

The people in the first group were the people who when they had their shot at the big time they choked. Sure everyone would've been nervous no doubt, but they really got spooked by the big occasion.

The biggest thing that got me though was that everyone in this group made an excuse why they failed to deliver. Not that they just stuffed up, but there's this happening, blah blah blah.

The second group were the people who stepped up to the plate and nailed it. These people would've waited all of their lives for this one shot at becoming a star. They dug deep and lifted when it counted.

The big difference between the 2 groups - 1 made excuses, the other didn't.
This is the same in the game of life - you have the excuse makers who get nowhere and the doers that get wherever they want AND don't make excuses on their way there.

What group are you in?

The other take home point I got from that show was something that one of the judges - Jason Coleman said - "Life isn't about what you've got to lose. Life is about what you've got to gain".
Pretty awesome words hey?

Don't get spooked by the possibility of achieving something that may take you out of your comfort zone. Aim high and put in the hard yards.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I love getting stuck into my nuts as a healthy snack. Here's another great reason why they should be on your desk right now!

Eat This to Crack Down on DiabetesBy Kelley Herring
Nutritionists have long praised nuts as a superfood, thanks to their healthy fats, high protein content, and mineral riches. And a new study published in Diabetes Care shows they're helpful for diabetics, too.
In the study, diabetic patients were assigned to one of three different diets - a low-fat diet, a modified low-fat diet, or a modified low-fat diet that included an ounce of walnuts per day. After six months, the participants on the walnut diet had a greater increase in their HDL-to-total cholesterol ratio than the other groups, as well as a 10 percent reduction in their LDL cholesterol.
Because having diabetes greatly increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, keeping cholesterol levels in check is particularly important for diabetics.
To get the benefits, enjoy an ounce of walnuts a day (about 10 halves). Try walnuts chopped and added to salads, mixed into your morning cereal, or right out of the shell.

So I hope you can take on board my observations from a tv show - whoever thought I would've left watching a tv show about dancing feeling enriched and motivated?

Now it's your turn to get out and make it a great week!

THE ECONOMY'S BAD BECAUSE YOU'RE FAT!

So screams an article that was in The Denver Post.

I just finished reading it and couldn't resist adding my 2 cents worth.

Basically, the article is focused on Brad Cooper, a Corporate Fitness Professional, much like myself, who is based in Colorado.

"Health care costs keep expanding with our jellyrolls. Today, 65 percent of Americans are overweight and 35 percent are clinically obese. This marks roughly a 10 percent increase in our collective bulge over the past five years.

Some blame fast food for congealing our arteries. Some blame the medical and pharmaceutical industries for hawking drugs over sensible lifestyle changes. Others blame technology for turning us into screen-fixated blobs.

Cooper blames you."

My 2 cents:

I love this bloke. He's got the balls to come out and say in the media what most Fitness Professionals have privately thought for years.

Thumbs up Brad, you've done well mate!

Personally, I'm sick of my health fund premiums going up each year because too many sick people are claiming rebates.

Why can't us healthy people get rebates or tax concessions come tax time because we are not over burdening the ever increasing shambles that is the New South Wales Public Health Care System

C'mon K-Rudd it's time to pull the finger out and do something proactive for the ever growing minority that do look after themselves!

Well, I'm sitting back watching the Superbowl. The beauty of being your own boss - work from home while watching the game!

This game is particularly interesting. For the first time in about 36 years, a team is trying to go through the whole season UNDEFEATED.

Not a bad effort. Seeking perfection.

For mine, it has interesting parallels to our own search for fulfilment of our own personal goals.

But the real story of inspiration was something I read in the Sun Herald yesterday.

It was a feature article on Ryley Batt, an Australian Wheelchair Rugby player and his quest to make the Paralympic Games this year.

If you are feeling down in the dumps about whatever cards that life is dealing you at the moment, read this.

It will be a great reality check.

If you missed it and you're interested in reading the whole article, take a few mins and check out the link below:

Inspiring stuff right!

MY 2 CENTS WORTH

Lately there has been a lot of press in the local media about the obesity epidemic and most of it is misinformation and sensationalist journalism as far as I'm concerned.

Take todays Telegraph for example: 'Healthy' Foods That Hide Fat screams the headline. Basically they are saying that a Big Mac has less fat than some breakfast muesli and ready to eat meals.

The big point the sensational heading missed was that even though a muesli is high fat, it has nuts in it, which are high fat and if anyone tries to tell you that nuts are not good for a healthy diet than I'd walk the other way.

Muesli is not the best breakfast option, but definately not the worst option. Most pre packaged cereals that come in a box are just sugar disguised as a meal.

AND whoever said a ready to eat meal is a 'healthy' meal? Read the nutritional labels if you are confused!

If the ingredient list of your frozen meals has a list as long as your arm of words that you cannot pronounce and numbers than you would hardly call it healthy.

Don't believe me? Go home and check out your freezer on your weight watchers meal.

The best option is to cook a quick stir fry if you are short on time.

I don't claim to be Jamie Oliver in the kitchen but i can chop some veges throw in some beans or chick peas if I don't have time to chop up some meat and presto, 5 mins later I've got a great tasting, healthy meal that takes about 2 mins longer than nuking your frozen dinner. Drizzle some flax seed oil on top if you want some extra taste.

That feels better after getting that off my chest!
