GET MOTIVATED WITH DPM PERFORMANCE blog ed 13

This weekend I've noticed 4 inspiring efforts from the sporting area. I was able to find a take home point out of each effort, although they all summed up something different.

The first one I read about in one of the Sunday papers yesterday. It involved a deaf fencer who was training for a spot in the Olympic Games. Yes, the Olympic Games. He actually believed that his deafness was a benefit as he had to focus more.

How's that for looking at the glass half full!

For some reason, something drew me to read that article. Now, I don't know about you, but I'd rather watch paint dry then watch fencing, but that's not the point of the story. Anyone who rises from their disadvantages to make something of themselves is alright in my book.

Another inspiring effort, was from Roger Federer, who was 2 points away from losing a match deep in the 5th set of the Aussie Open but dug deep and found that little bit extra.

I was half hoping the underdog would win, but you can't knock a champion, and they always show their class when it counts. When the hard was is to be done, you know who you can turn too. Important take home point number 2.

If there's anyone I'd want playing for my life in any sport, Federer would definately make the shortlist.

My number 3 was also from the tennis, and if you've been glued to your tv set like me, can probably imagine I'm talking about Casey Dellacqua. The Aussie underdog stepped up big time on Friday night to beat Mauresmo convincingly and put in a great fight last night against the #3 in the world going to a tie break in the first set. Take home point number 3 - back yourself, even if no one else will.

The final inspiring moment for me was on Saturday (yes i watched a bit of sport this weekend!).

While we were getting pasted by the Indians in the cricket, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark, who if you are not familiar with the game, definately are not recognised batsmen stepped up and had a go and belted the Indians around the park. Not bad when our top order batsmen hardly troubled the scorers.

A comparison, for the North American readers would be John Smoltz hitting 2 grandslams while Chipper Jones goes 0-5 all game. Take home point number 4 - go down fighting. Don't take a backwards step.

I hope you can gain another insight into some great performances. By looking a little deeper at any situation, you can often take a lot more out of it then it would otherwise seem.

THE CARDIO MACHINE THAT SUCKS!

Yep, I'll put my hand up. I used to recommend people use this machine in a gym. BUT I used to do a lot of things. This is a point that Fitness Expert Craig Ballantyne recently pointed out to me.

The main take home point is when I find something better or I realise that a habit I USED to do is counter-productive, I STOP it.

Recently, I was in Tampa, Florida, at a seminar. Between sessions, a physician from Georgia stopped me in the hall and said, "Hey Craig, you were right about those crosstrainer machines. I've had your program for a few months now and I'm getting better results with the bodyweight circuits."
It's always great to meet clients, and I was curious to find out how he heard of me. Turns out, he found me through Google, landing on an article I wrote about "how elliptical machines (crosstrainers) suck for fat loss".
That's right, I think those machines are almost a complete waste of time.
"I was using one of those machines for a long time and was wondering why I wasn't getting any results," the physician continued, "I'm so glad I found your program and now I'm using the bodyweight circuits from the Dumbell-Bodyweight Fusion Workout", he added.
I told him how I wasn't surprised. In fact, I've never personally known anyone to get great results with one of those crosstrainer machines. Now I've watched really lean people use them, but they didn't get lean with those machines.
I know some people will be angry with what I have to say because they like exercising on the crosstrainer, but the truth is that they just don't work as well as harder forms of interval training.

Every training session you do, every time you eat some healthy food, and the incidental exercise you do each day is putting money in your own personal body bank. Some deposits are small, such as eating an apple, while some are much bigger like an intense workout.

GET MOTIVATED WITH DPM PERFORMANCE blog ed. 12

This is an awesome Nike commercial, that hopefully we will be seeing more of here soon. It only takes a minute but it is great timing considering the goals everyone sets at this time of year and the excuses that normally stop people from doing so.

After watching that, I hope you are still on track with your goals for 2008.

If you followed my advice from last week and cut out one of your unhealthy food habits from Monday to Friday, i hope you got the chance to have a little bit of a taste during the weekend just gone - not too much - but just enough to make you feel like a normal person again!

Now, provided we got that task accomplished (and I can happily report that I did!), the challenge for this week is to keep up the 1st weeks challenge but now add in another food or drink choice that is an unhealthy option.

So, your selection this week might be alcohol, soft drinks, unhealthy snack options like chips or cakes etc. You get the picture by now I assume.

What's the point of this challenge?

Well, being able to abstain for 5 days from something that you really enjoy is a lot more realistic and easier than going cold turkey.

Your chances of success are a lot higher if you know you only have to wait 5 days until you can enjoy a drink with dinner again!

Yes, it may take you longer to achieve your results in the long term. But hey, this ain't the Biggest Loser, where you have to lose an unreasonable amount of weight in a week.

I'm in for the long haul here, and you should be too.

MY 2 CENTS WORTH

There has been a lot of publicity here in the media recently on the push for obese teenagers to have lap-band surgery to solve there weight problems.

Now, for my 2 cents worth. This is the biggest load of rubbish that I have ever heard!

The reason teenagers, and kids who are even younger, are obese is because of the crap that their parents allow them to eat.

Surely, changing the behaviours through proper food education (and that includes their dunce parents who allow them to eat this rubbish in the first place) and the removal of junk food from school canteens is a better place to start.

Or is that just the society that we live in? Out for a quick solution, only to realise that if the individuals habbits aren't changed then it's back to square one further on down the track.

Well I feel better about getting that off my chest now.

WELCOME TO 2008! blog ed. 11

I hope you're as excited about 2008 as I am!

The thing I love about the start of a new year is the slate is wiped clean. If last year wasn't one of your best it doesn't matter.

If it was, then like me, I am inspired to make this year even bigger.

What's your goal for this year?

These words from UK Fitness and Motivation Expert, Dax Moy are very timely for this time of year:

"If you can't tell your goals to other people, they won't happen. If you can speak about them comfortably, they will happen"

I have told my goals to family and friends over the break, which is great, because it helps keep me accountable.


FOOD FOR THOUGHT

To start the year off on the right note, I am assuming that most of us need to change a habit or two that we slipped into over the Christmas break.

For some, that challenge may seem more daunting then others. Chances are most people try some crazy diet and last for a week or two before slipping off the bandwagon when it becomes too much and the social life starts calling again.

So, here is my 2008 success plan for us, yes, I include myself in this too.

I want you to focus on one area that you feel you need to concentrate on the most. For me, I enjoyed a few more drinking sessions over the break then I normally would during the year.

For others it may be too much chocolate, too many deserts, too many fast foods etc. I think you get the picture by now.

Now, what's the challenge once you've selected your focus area?

I'm setting the challenge for you to abstain from that habit from Monday to Friday only. Once again, for me, it means not having a drink from Monday to Friday. If I feel like a quite beer on a Saturday then I can and won't feel guilty about it.

For you, you may have to refrain from those tasty chocolate nuts until the weekend!
